Judaic Studies Minor

Both of the Judaic Studies (JUS) minor concentrations will be listed in the student's transcript as a "Minor in Judaic Studies." Students must earn a grade of "C-" or better must be attained in each course taken for the minor with an overall GPA of 2.0. Each of the JUS minor concentrations are eligible to qualify as a cognate in either "Arts and Humanities" or "People and Society." Students are encouraged to contact the JUS undergraduate advisor who will make the determination as to which JUS courses count towards either cognate.

Regular Concentration

  • 3 Credits

    Students must complete at least one of the following courses:

    • JUS 231 - Jewish Civilization: Society, Culture, and Religion
    • Any course in Jewish Literature offered by the English Department.
    • GEG 385 - Jewish Geography

  • 12 Credits

    Students must complete 12 credits in Ancient Jewish History and Society (ancient) or Modern Jewish History and Society courses (modern). Students are encouraged to complete one course in Ancient Jewish History and Society and one course in Modern Jewish History and Society. 

    The program director will designate which courses qualify as "ancient" or "modern" each semester.

  • *HEB 101 - Elementary Hebrew I

    Students are encouraged to take Elementary Hebew I (HEB 101) as a part of the 12 credits mentioned above.

Hebrew Language Concentration

    Students must complete at least one of the following courses:

    • JUS 231 - Jewish Civilization: Society, Culture, and Religion
    • Any course in Jewish Literature offered by the English Department.
    • GEG 385 - Jewish Geography

  • 6 Credits

    At least two of the following courses must be completed:

    • HEB 101 - Elementary Hebrew I
    • HEB 102 - Elementary Hebrew II
    • HEB 201 - Intermediate Hebrew I
    • HEB 202 - Intermediated Hebrew II

    Courses may be completed at the University of Miami, or the may completed via transfer of Hebrew Language credits.

  • 6 Credits

    Any additional Judaic Studies (JUS) courses or courses combined with Judaic Studies must be completed 

  • *Please Note

    Native Hebrew speakers require the advanced approval of the Judaic Studies (JUS) undergraduate advisor before they enroll in the concentration. Completing the JUS Minor with a concentration in Hebrew Language including HEB 101, HEB 102, HEB 201, or HEB 202 will fulfill the requirement of a foreign language.
